Should obesity be treated as a disease?

Obesity is one of the most common health issues these days and also poses a threat to many people. The reason for obesity has few factors which includes psychological, physical or genetic reason behind it. DMG Solution also thinks in the same way as the medical experts believe these days. There are many organizations that termed obesity as a disease, but many people are against that.

Obesity is the situation of excessive fat in the body, and it is also known as “adiposity”. There are many reasons behind excessive fat, and that too can create many problems for health. Obesity can be measured by the ratio of body height and body weight. BMI is also another factor which helps to measure obesity.

According to the “American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery“, there are three different classes for the measurement of obesity and the classes are made by the help of BMI range. The classes are named as Class I, Class II, Class III and here BMI range is “30 to 34.9”, “35 to 39.9” and 40 or more respectively.

Before defining obesity as a disease, we from DMG Solution will explain the meaning of illness first. Any condition of health which creates a problem on the functions of the body can be mentioned as a disease and as per this definition, “American Medical Association (AMA)” has termed obesity as a disease, and there are also other reasons behind that decision.  There are also a few diseases which may be the reason for the increase of weight and those diseases are “hypothyroidism, Cushing’s Disease, polycystic ovary syndrome”. And because of this disease, obesity can also be termed as a disease. As there is not much specific process to know the reason of excessive fat, then by assuming these diseases as the reason for obesity, obesity can be termed as a disease.

There are also many other organizations except AMA, that also recognized obesity as a disease and “WHO (World Health Organization)” is the most important of them.

On the other hand, there are also a few reasons which support the statement that obesity is not a disease. Those reasons are that it can be seen that obesity does not always make the condition of health. Many people from all over the world are suffering from obesity but living a healthy life.

There is also not much system for a precise measurement of obesity. Therefore it cannot be adequately measured. If it cannot be estimated, then it won’t be right to term it as a disease.

Usually, a disease requires medicine or operations. But in the case of obesity, there are many psychological reasons which are uncontrollable. In that case, it cannot be cured. And if it is termed as a disease, then it will imply that the same illness requires different solutions for different people which usually not happen much.

Therefore, by reviewing all the reasons, DMG Solution thinks that obesity can be termed as a disease because the primary definition of the disease means the improper functions of health and obesity works in that way.
